Full show notes:
Today’s Topic: Understanding how the cognitive function of Introverted Intuition (nicknamed Insightful Intuition) shows up in kids and what they need from you.
- This is the dominant (driver) function for INFJs and INTJs.
- It’s the auxiliary (co-pilot) function for ENFJs and ENTJs.
Overview of Imaginative Intuition
- An Introverted function: deals with the inner world
- A Perceiving function: deals with how we take in information
- Insightful Intuition users take in information by: Looking for hidden meanings and patterns and extrapolating them into the bigger picture and an insight for the future.
In adults (episode 47) we talked about this function having 4 facets:
- Future Insights
- Perspective Taking
- Self-observing
- Novel Problem Solving
Before we get into what it looks like in kids, I want to give a reminder, as we mentioned in the parents episode, that this is the rarest of all of the cognitive functions. Less than 5% of the population uses this function in their front seat, and the two types that use it as their driver (INTJ/INFJ) make up about half that.
- May not feel as though they fit in
- May not be understood in school, by friends etc
- Unique gifts to bring to the world – as a parent you can help them see this in themselves
What this looks like in kids:
(these will be true MOST of the time with INFJ/INTJ kids and true just some of the time for ENFJ/ENTJ kids)
In their head
- Insightful Intuition is an internal process of pattern analysis and therefore Insightful Intuition kids are most comfortable when oriented to their inner world.
- They tend to enjoy being alone or just watching from the sidelines especially if something is new or unfamiliar
- May often be found day-dreaming and imagining worlds and scenarios inside their own head
Observant
- They pick up on the behaviors and patterns in the people and environment around them in order to find an explanation as to why things are the way they are.
- An Insightful Intuition kid can often be heard asking “why” and may be drawn to science, religion or other subjects and theories that explain the mysteries of the world.
Drawn to novelty
- Insightful Intuition kids have an attraction to finding new ways of doing things which leads them to be quite creative and imaginative.
Difficulty with practical and routine details –
- Difficult time with the routine practical things that need to be done like brushing their teeth every night, putting away toys, etc.
Visionary
- Insightful Intuition kids use their love of finding insights to come up with great plans for the future. They are most excited thinking about a new project or idea.
- Confident in their visions/insights and hold fast to them
What your child needs:
- Respect their need for quiet time alone (INFJ/INTJ)
- Let them watch from the sidelines first for an activity (INFJ/INTJ)
- Encourage their curiosity
- Encourage their creativity and imagination
- Let them try some of their visionary ideas
- When it come to issues in the home, involve them in coming up with a solution by using their novel problem solving abilities
- Don’t give them a hard time about daydreaming or having their head in the clouds
